To Blow, Or To Plow? That is The Question. Skid Steer Snow Blowers vs Snow Plows
A skid steer snowblower or skid steer snow plows? It’s a question we often hear from our skid loader attachment customers. It depends on what you want to do with the snow. Do you want to push it into a pile, or spread it out with the skid steer snowblower?
I can still remember the giant mountains of snow in the grocery store parking lot when I was a kid. They were almost as tall as the store itself, and I thought about how fun they would be to climb and slide down. And it was May! School was almost out, and there was still snow.
Those mountains were the result of several months of plowing. As a kid, I didn’t even think about how many parking spaces had been made unusable by the massive mountains. Even today, plow operators don’t have much choice. They need a place to pile the snow.
Do I Need a Skid Steer Snowblower or Snow Plow?
Skid steer loader owners do have a choice though. They can use a traditional plow, or they can use a skid steer snowblower, and blow the snow into grassy areas, off of the parking lot. A skid steer snowblower is a much larger version of the walk-behind type.
Depending on your location, snow removal can be a terrific source of income, and the nimble and powerful skid loader and skid steer snowblower/snow plow is a better tool for the job than a pickup truck and plow. But should you buy a skid steer snowblower or plow?
To begin with, the plow can push a tremendous amount of snow in short order. If it weren’t good, it wouldn’t be available, end of story. But the skid steer snowblower can go where no plow can. I don’t know anyone whose neighborhood has survived a snowy winter devoid of “plow scars,” deep cuts in the asphalt or lawn caused by the sharp-edged plow blade. To their credit, plowers have a difficult job when it comes to avoiding curbs, lawns, and other obstacles during a white-out.
The Benefit of the Skid Steer Snowblower
The skid steer snowblower, can be taken right up onto sidewalks and pathways. It can be used in tight spaces and driveways without damaging underlying landscape. And, with an adjustable chute, the snow is removed incrementally and evenly redistributed wherever you choose.
The plow is a great high-volume snow remover. But when it comes to precise removal, a high quality skid steer snowblower is ideal.
But I still like to see the snow mountains in the parking lots.
