Bobcat Skid Steer Attachment Review: Cold Planer

Equipping your Bobcat skid steer with a cold planer attachment can help eliminate a large, cumbersome piece of road construction equipment. The traditional cold planer is dedicated to the removal of worn and deteriorated asphalt and other road materials. A large truck is required to bring in and deposit the cold planer vehicle, so it can begin preparing an old roadway for repaving.

There are many other applications, however, where the same kind of planing and removal is needed, but the giant vehicle would amount to awkward overkill. That’s where the a Bobcat skid steer loader with a cold planer attachment can come in handy. A conveniently sized, attachable cold planer unit has been devised expressly for the already multi-purpose, go-anywhere Bobcat skid steer loader.

Here’s the scene: an electrical conduit, water or drainage pipe needs to be installed under an existing road or driveway. The Bobcat operator knows that the backhoe attachment will be great for providing the right width and depth in the soil beneath, but that the backhoe bucket would tear the asphalt into jagged chunks, and make for a messy patch job.

The solution: Securely fastened to the highly maneuverable Bobcat skid steer loader boom, the cold planer attachment uses its carbide teeth to surgically remove a section of the road right to soil level, leaving straight, sharp edges that make for an easy and beautiful repair once the conduit is installed and back-filled. The cold planer attachment comes in several widths as well, from 12 to as much as 40 inches, and can be tilted to match the road surface or shifted side-to-side.

The wider cold planer attachments for the Bobcat skid steer are perfect for smoothing out roads and driveways, as well as eliminating harsh joints between parking lot sections. Carbide teeth are attached to a rotating drum inside the unit, and the whole thing spins using a planetary drive for high torque.

This rugged attachment is also self-leveling for precision lapping and tapering, and has high clearance in the rear so that it won’t recirculate the removed material. A good cold planer attachment for the Bobcat skid steer loader will also include protective shields for the hydraulics and electrics, and will have protected grease fittings.

Making a rugged tool like the cold planer attachment portable and removable is smart. Attaching it to the venerable, versatile Bobcat skid steer loader is just “plane” genius.
